Location Based Interaction Assignment

Location (Given): Worcester Common Area (near the Courthouse)

Piece will specifically display and be interacted with at Worcester Common Oval.

Season to Display: Summer (June - August)

Piece Description

Imprinted Hand
Polymer Clay Imprint Example

At the start of the 3 months, the piece, “Worcester Imprinted”, will simply be a large 3 to 5-inch-thick Polymer Clay Oval covered with a large tarp (tear resistant) and placed at the center of the Worcester Commons Oval. A sign explaining that walking on the tarp is encouraged will be included. People will be encouraged (more on that in the section below) to walk on it, imprinting a little bit of themselves onto a piece for a month and a half.

Will be placed in center of Oval.
Tarp/Clay can hold 5 - 10 people approx. Plenty of space remaining.
Tarp will be placed atop polymer clay oval.
Clay is sandwiched by tarp atop and thin platform beneath.

After this time passes the tarp will be removed, and the polymer clay will be publicly baked with blowtorches (this is NOT an interactive activity for the public, but they can watch from a distance); once hardened it will be lifted and placed on a stand to display and interact with (touch) between the Commons Oval and Front St. (facing the Oval) for the remainder of the time the piece is allowed to be displayed (no sealer required).

Design Purpose

This is the slogan on the Worcester Commons Oval Website, and this piece falls in line with the kinds of events and activities that are normally held there. The piece itself, easy and self-explanatory to interact with, doesn't get in the way of other events held at the Oval, still allows for (slightly limited) seating - though perhaps some seating will occasionally be placed on the tarp itself to catch imprints of people at different states of being (walking, participating in a low budget activity, relaxing, etc.) and allows for additional events to be held that specifically incorporate the clay.

An example of events that don't get in the way, the Lunch Festivals held at the oval can continue to be held, people will be encouraged to interact with the clay and contribute to the piece (stand and eat on it, etc.). An example of an event specifically incorporating the clay, perhaps a dance competition where dancers must groove on the tarp itself.
