Weekly Blog Entry Research & Project Updates (2)
The idea I came up with last week was met with enthusiastic approval (of which I am glad for – I myself was very excited for the idea when I initially thought it up) and so this week I set about doing the foundational conceptual work & research I tasked myself with for the next two weeks before I even think about moving forward and beginning the modeling process.
The theme of my research this week, was anatomy. In regard to space, I created a Bubble Diagram laying out the anatomy of the Museum (AKA Glass Aviary) space itself.

The space consists of…
· Halls [6] - Will be modular; I don’t need the Halls being different from one another – this will lead to smarter modeling as opposed to more modeling.
Halls will have birds hanging from the ceilings (leading players to the next point of interest) see image from last week.
Will start off with one or two owls but will increase exponentially as player approaches first room.
Owls will mainly be used in the halls at the start but will begin to transition to crows, until there are more crows leading players than owls (never will there be no owls, but there will eventually be a manageable number of owls).
One Hall features a cage, providing a new perspective on something players may have seen from the Foyer.
· Main Open Rooms [3] - Each room will represent the pandemic in a general range of time.
Room 1 represents the beginning and the horror that quickly & exponentially befell us. Filled with nothing but Origami Owls (see below). Chaotic, flying in all directions, littered on the ground, covering the walls (very little of the original wall should be able to be seen)
Room 2 represents the dual nature of the bad and the good that arose during the pandemic. This means owls (less so than in Room 1) and Sparrows.
Room 3 represents the present and future. The hope for a brighter tomorrow (reflective doves lining the end wall), the looming threat of more darkness before the end (owls poised to strike at the doves), the potential for more good (eagles and sparrows posed defending the doves) and a remembrance of the fallen – doves are almost completely reflective, behind them, a wall of those who have fallen. This room can be seen from the start through a cage, the promise of a fighting chance for a better tomorrow out of your reach until you experience everything else first.
· Foyer [1] - Entry area, will only have 1 massive lone vulture – a warning of what’s to come. And only a couple of owls dotting the entry to the first hall.
Can see into side room (see below) and can see through cage into Room 3 (see above).
· Side Room [1] - Optional side area showing the transformation and change the pandemic is bringing down. Will feature a “tornado” of origami crows, in the center, a lone Vulture sitting atop a caged eagle. The crows represent change, either good or bad. The vulture is a warning, the caged eagle is the worst-case scenario. The ground by the cage will have more owls, towards the outside of the room are sparrows and doves.
This room can be seen from Foyer – something to keep in the back of your mind before entering the darkness.
All rooms will be partially modular as well to save on modeling time (Room 1, Room 3, and Side Room will look similar, the Foyer and Room 2 will share features as well). This will make sure each room has its own flavor while cutting down on time spent working. Concepts of what these rooms will look like will be part of my next blog post. Overall, I hope for the Museum Space layout to loosely resemble a clock (plenty of straight and curved surfaces – need to research how to place origami on walls efficiently - for all walls) to lean into the idea of exploring one topic across a period of time.
Aside from the space, I looked into the birds of interest as well, researching color theory that played into what each bird symbolized, as well as “origami-style” shapes to model them after when the time comes.
· Owls (Representing insight, wisdom, death)
o Colors: Black

· Vultures (Representing character tested, period of bad luck/misfortune, inspiration)
o Colors: Shades of Orange/Yellow/Brown

· Crows (Representing transformation, change, adaption)
o Colors: Turquoise/Magenta/Alternate Shades of Orange
o Anatomy Basis (Link 1)

· Eagles (Representing courage, rebirth, power)

· Sparrows (Representing productivity, diligence, creativity)
o Colors: Shades of Blue/Yellow/Orange/White

· Doves (Representing peace, maternity, love, and purity) – STILL OPTIONAL
o Colors: White (Almost Invisible)
o Still unsure if it will be included this semester. Regardless I have found a good site to use as a foundation to model it should I decide to include it.

Things I need to still look into…
1. Room size (start small, end big? To be addressed in concepts for next post)
2. Where to get image of people who have died from the pandemic (tasteful, perhaps the DNC image is available?)
3. Forks in halls (would lead to the same place – representing that, regardless of path person takes (positive or negative), the overall story of the pandemic will still move forward, progress will still be made in living under it as well as researching a vaccine for it)
4. Need to make sure the low poly birds have shapes that can be manipulated to look as if in flight – see below (otherwise I may need to model 2 versions of certain birds – not a deal breaker as the low poly count should make modeling quick and efficient).

Tentative Project Schedule
· Week 3 (This Week): Low Poly 3D models/online reference images/(possible) sketches of Interior Space
· Week 4 – Week 6: Model Museum Space
· Week 7 – Week 8: Model Origami Style Birds
· Week 9 – Week 10: Texturing Museum Space/Birds
· Week 11 – Week 14: Putting Everything Together – Place assets in game engine (Unity); appropriate scaling, duplicating, lighting work, sound work (acoustics in Museum Space and how the glass of the birds plays with that). I give myself 4 weeks – more time than any step earlier - but can easily be pushed to less time if I am behind in the previous steps outlined in the schedule above.
