Weekly Blog Entry Research & Project Updates (10)

This week I textured everything. Everything that will or could potentially be used in the final presentation has been textured (as you can see below). No issues to report this week, as I suspected from last week, this was a quick process after taking the time to make sure the first few were done right – errors from last week have been corrected, and now everything is set to move onto the final phase of the project, actually putting everything together.

The final product at the end of the semester will be a video in which I demo (i.e. walk around in) the space I’ve created for my prototype “Art Game”. On that note, I’ve decided I am very likely to move forward with this project in future semesters and next year for my thesis (if that is the case year 1 will be creating a conceptual prototype of my “Art Game” wherein the player explores a Museum Space depicting the Coronavirus through bird symbolism; year 2, I will take a team and turn that prototype into a short “game”/interactive experience about 10 – 30 minutes in length).

In the spirit of learning more about “Art Games”, I will be writing my paper on the subject (specifically the how and why of them, next semester I want to dig into them in the context of the larger games industry and art world). Linked here (temporary) is my Outline on a Google doc.

Finally, as you’ll see below, I also started on my final project for my 3D Digital Art Course (proposal is linked here, also temporary) – It’ll be a bust, built into stone, of a masked medical worker, paying tribute to the workers on the frontlines of a pandemic that is poised to continue to get worse before it gets better. Despite the fact this is for a different course because it ties into the project (and will likely be among the deliverables at the end of the semester) I will be tracking progress for it on my blog as well.

The final phase of the project was originally slated to be 4 weeks, I did this intentionally in case something arose that would take time from the final steps I intend to take with the project this semester. That something turns out to be the final paper, next week I will not be working on the project itself but rather the rough draft of the final paper (and the medical worker bust as that is for a separate course), I will return to this on week 12 and use the remaining 3 weeks to put everything together and prepare for the final presentation.

Face Template created for 3D Digital Art Final Project (bust of medical worker), to be done in Blender and Substance Painter. (As opposed to other assets done with Maya and Substance Painter).

Tentative Project Schedule

· Week 11 (This Week): Medical Worker Bust for 3D Digital Art Course & Final Paper Rough Draft

· Week 12 – Week 14: Putting Everything Together – Place assets in game engine (Unity); appropriate scaling, duplicating, lighting work, sound work (acoustics in Museum Space and how the glass of the birds plays with that) final polish, record/edit final demo video for presentation. Additionally, complete bust for 3D Digital Art and place into final scene, complete final paper.
